About Me

Abamuht is a Cree word for a river near the James Bay coast. Abamuht translates as “the river that turns back almost to where it began”. Ms. Spence’s father suggested the name. He would travel to this river, his birthplace, with his family until he was five years old. He was then forced to attend Residential school for 10 yrs. He was able to return to Abamuht once during that time. The river represents the journey we take and go back to where we come from when we heal. Suzanne Spence's father (Cree) is from Fort Albany First Nation and her mother (French) . Her practice utilizes pieces of western and traditional therapies. Her counselling style is unique in that it is an infusion of therapies with a warm and interactive setting. She strongly believes that the client is the expert in their own healing and that there is no single approach is right for everyone. She has been trained in different modalities such as EMDR, Focused Intention Technique, Thought Field Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Trauma and Attachment Counselling. Ms. Spence suggests and shares tools and strategies so the client may utilize what best fits.
