About Me

Jan Owen, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Grief Coach, and Author based in Huntsville, Alabama, brings a wealth of personal and clinical experience to her role as a grief and trauma therapist. Certified in Death and Grief Studies and as an EMDR therapist, she owns Back Porch Counseling and The Sanctuary at Bluffhaven, offering grief retreats and therapy. Previously an ordained minister, Jan's teaching is enriched by her firsthand experience with grief, having lost her husband and mother. Beyond her professional life, Jan enjoys reading, travel planning, music, nature walks, and spending time with family and her two miniature Australian Shepherds. As a two-time University of Alabama graduate, I passionately cheer for the Crimson Tide. I reside in North Alabama with my husband and am committed to helping others find hope and healing after loss, drawing from my own journey of "beginning again" in life as a widow at age 48. I have learned the importance of appreciating life's beauty and not taking it for granted. Since being widowed, I am learning to pay attention to the beauty of life because I don’t take it for granted anymore. When I am not working with clients I enjoy reading, college football, stand up paddleboarding, traveling, and spending time with my family and my sweet pups Ruby and River.
