
Becoming an EMDRIA Approved Trainer™
Follow this structured process to become an EMDRIA Approved Trainer™.
Trainers are active EMDRIA Approved Consultants™ who teach EMDR basic training to other mental health professionals. They are responsible for ensuring that trainees learn how to effectively use EMDR therapy in clinical practice. This application process ensures fidelity to EMDR therapy content and instructional standards.

Steps to Become a Trainer
Step 1: Understand EMDR Basic Training Requirements
Before applying, review the essential standards and policies:

Step 2: Confirm Your Eligibility
To apply, you must be an active EMDRIA Approved Consultant™. While not required, working with an existing EMDRIA Approved Trainer™ can be helpful.
Step 3: Build Your Course in an LMS
Build an EMDR basic training course in a Learning Management System (LMS) (e.g. Canvas or Moodle) that includes all the requirements from the documents in Step 1.
Alternatively, you may work with an EMDRIA Approved Trainer™ to use an existing, approved LMS and/or training materials.
Step 4: Submit the Initial Application
Complete the initial application. You will answer some questions regarding your EMDR basic training course and upload an affidavit attesting that you are not using AI in the development of materials.
After staff review, you’ll be enrolled in the Trainer Application Course in EMDRIA’s Canvas system.
Step 5: Complete the Trainer Application Course
Upload all required materials in Canvas within 1 year of applying. Assignments can be completed in any order, except for the Introductory and Conclusion modules. EMDRIA staff will review your submissions and may request additional details.
Record Teaching Samples: Submit short recordings of yourself teaching key EMDR topics.

- Reprocessing (Phases 4, 5, and/or 6)
- One additional topic of your choice
Create an Intro Video: A brief video introducing trainees to your course.
Submit Course Evidence: Upload links to your course materials (LMS), explanations, and supporting documents.
Step 6: Application Review
- Once all requirements are met successfully, EMDRIA will invoice you for the application fee.
- If approved, you will receive the EMDRIA Approved Trainer™ credential, valid for 2 years.
Ready? Start the Process
- Visit the application and click "New User."
- Enter your email and create a (Note your login details for future access!)
- Click "Submit" to log in.
- Read the application details and download materials for reference.
- If you need to pause, scroll down and click "Save Progress."
- Review all requirements, then sign, date, and submit the application.
