“Professor Matthew Kiernan is the director of the Northern Hub for Veteran and Military Families Research—Northumbria University Newcastle. He entered academia as a mature student while serving in the Royal Navy. Initially qualifying as a registered general nurse in Derby in 1991, he trained as a registered nurse (mental health) in 2001 with a BSc in Medical Sciences from Sheffield University. He was awarded a PhD degree from Nottingham University in 2011. Prof Kiernan was the Head of Mental Health Nursing in the Royal Navy, the Specialist Nurse Advisor for Mental Health (Royal Navy), and the Defense Specialist Nurse Advisor (mental health) before taking up his appointment as a Senior Research Fellow at the Academic Department for Defense Nursing.”
